The road to outsource your production to another factory (and specifically in China) is a path lined with dangers and uncertainties. There are hundreds of war stories that you will hear. It takes some real people on the ground to make it work. Whist the might of Wal-Mart or Dell has the money and budget to get this done, unfortunately for most companies, these valuable resources are not there for a lot of you. What we at SAP will try to do is to jump start that initiative.

The deck will always be stacked against the 'newbie’s'  trying to find their way around the complexity of sourcing, understanding the different culture, the different mindset , and the discovering after spending the countless hours and money, that it all boils down to a "sorry, a misunderstanding, can we start again?". Even with our combined years of experiences in South-East Asia, Hong Kong and China, we have always heard the phase, "No problem". Well, brace for it, because no matter how much you think you have prepared, unexpected problem will arise, and when you are thousands of miles away, and you have a dateline on an event, you are just out of luck.  

 The main reason for looking at outsourcing in the first place is to be competitive - in Price, Deliverables, and an improvement in Quality. As a customer, you want the most competitive pricing, the earliest deliverable dates and a better quality product that exceed your customer's expectations. A simple economic equation as you may see, but on the other end of the equation, the factories also want the same thing - A good price, early deliverables and good Quality. Pricing that allow them to make better returns so that they can invest in better machinery, early deliverables so that they can be paid faster thus improving their cash flow, and better quality so that you will re-order. BUT somehow these equations, on paper seems like what you and the factories are looking for - seems equal, clashes all the time and eventually  leads to a breakdown in the relationship. This is the current situation - what we at SAP call economic pressure - i.e. you need the best price, using the best material, under the best delivery schedules, and so does the factories, how it is that such clear principles of the same economic goals are so different apart?  Unfortunately, for most deals ...this equation is not that straight forward. If it is, we will not be here to serve you, and we are here to balance that equation.
